IT Internship Posting

WISH Canada is a Vancouver-based recruitment firm specializing in internships for international students. We have four offices, two in Vancouver, one in Toronto and one in Seoul, South Korea. From these offices we place hundreds of international students in paid and unpaid internships, arrange working holiday placements and accommodation and run several job sites. We have more than ten staff members and collectively we speak: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Korean and Japanese.
We are currently looking for 2-3 good web people for full or part-time work. We are busily expanding our operations overseas and need the web people to help back this up. This job is initially for a 3-4 month period, but could go permanent. You will be responsible for a number of different company websites and our on-line database, as well as some trouble-shooting net admin work around the office.
These are ideal positions for recent grads, co-op students, or New Canadians looking to gain local experience. That said, all applications receive serious consideration.
The two jobs are:

Web & Web Apps Developer

This is a hard skills position. We need someone to put all of the cool features into our sites. Much of your work will be asp.net and VB, so you’ve got to love code.
Required Skills:

  • html
  • css
  • javascript
  • php
  • visual basic
  • mysql
  • asp.net
  • dreamweaver
  • flash

Graphic and Web Developer

This is the person who will make our materials marketable. You basically have three jobs, help create content, make it look good, and perform SEO.

Required Skills:

  • html
  • css
  • dreamweaver
  • flash
  • illustrator
  • photoshop

NB: If you have ever used the font ‘comic sans’ – do not apply for this job.

Familiarity with WordPress.com/wordpress.org a big plus. Korean language skills wouldn’t hurt.

For both positions, please apply with resume and a link to your home page or blog. Email: rjago@wishvancouver.com

Australian Working Holidaymakers Can Now Extend Their Visas

Reading through the new visa changes between Canada and Australia.

Basically it looks like this.  If you are Australian, under the age of 31, you can get a working holiday visa for Canada.  There are no quotas, so the entire country can come over if they wanted to.  There is no limit in the number of times you can get the visa, so if you’re already here in Canada with a visa and you want to stay? – go ahead! submit your application again and stay another two years.

Working Holiday Visas Now Closed in Australia

I saw this on the Canadian embassy website today:

The 2007 WHP CLOSED on 13 NOVEMBER 2007. Signed application forms received after this date will NOT be accepted and will be returned to the applicant with the un-receipted fee. The program re-opens on 02 January 2008.

Hope you got your applications in on time. If not – no big worries, the ski season lasts till March or later, so if you’ve got everything set up, then apply on January 2nd and arrive for the end of the month, and you’ll still get in a couple months on the slopes.

Testimonials

I just got back from a lunch-time meeting with Gun Wan at his host company.  He’s doing a web internship.  We need to meet with him later this week to follow up on some issues that arose during the meeting.

His office has an amazing view – even in the rain.  Here’s what you can see from his office:

Internship Testimonials

Akiko S.

I worked at [a law firm] as an administrative assistant and sometimes as a marketing assistant. I did emailing, copying, faxing, organizing, making some documents, and attending meetings.  I really enjoyed working at Specht & Pryer. All staffs are super nice and friendly, so I was able to be comfortable. It could not be better.   Over all I am satisfied with my internship experience.

I worked in IT sphere. My colleagues were really supportive and helpful. Regarding to my contribution to the company I think I was eager to do my best by trying to be initiative and creative. As for Wish Vancouver, I only had contacts with Robert and he did his job perfectly.

Visa requirements lifted for Czech Republic and Latvia

If you are from the Czech Republic or Latvia, you will no longer need to apply for a visitor’s permit to come to Canada. Just buy a plane ticket and come over.

OTTAWA (AFP) — Immigration Minister Diane Finley announced Wednesday that citizens of the Czech Republic and the Republic of Latvia no longer require a temporary resident visa to visit Canada.

“After careful analysis, Canada has determined the visa requirement for the Czech Republic and the Republic of Latvia will be removed,” Finley said in a statement.

“Canada enjoys strong ties with both of these countries, and lifting the visa requirement will help us build on those relationships to the benefit of Canadians and the citizens of the Republic of Latvia and the Czech Republic.”
